The wind barrier power generation system consists of two huge floating wind barriers, Barrier-1 and Barrier-2 (see.fig). Each of the barriers system has a large number of windows and they can collectively close or open with the help of electric motors and its associated gear arrangements that are provided on each of the wind barrier systems. The operation of the windows are controlled by electronic sensing systems. When the wind flows, the windows of the one barrier system will be collectively opened and the windows of the other barrier system collectively closed. This collective operation of the windows of the both barrier systems, in effect, trap huge amount of wind energy and that wind force is used to rotate electric generators and the electricity from the generators are used to electrolysis water to produce hydrogen.

Details about the operation of wind barriers.

As the wind flows (refer- fig- the position of the barriers), the windows of the Barrier system -1 are closed and the windows of the barrier system-2 are open. Now the wind force pushes the barrier-1 to 180* angle to the direction of the wind flow. As the barrier system acts as a perfect barrier to the wind flow, the barrier system-1 will move with almost of the entire force in the wind (as the barrier -1 moves one direction the barrier-2 moves the opposite direction -ref.fig) now the electric generator that coupled to the gear system (the gear system is coupled to the rack & pinions mechanism) generate electricity. The electricity generated by the generator is used to electrolysis water to produce hydrogen. After the maximum play length of the rack & pinion mechanism, an electronic sensing system send signal to the control system of the electric motors of the both the barrier systems. Now the windows of the barrier-1 will be collectively opened and the windows of the barrier -2 are collectively closed (see the working diagram below). As the windows of the barrier-2 are closed, the wind force exert its force to the barrier -2. Now also the rack & pinion mechanisms and the gear system delivers mechanical energy to the generators and the electricity is produced and all are repeated.

Unique features: Theoretically a perfect barrier to the wind is a 100% efficient wind force catcher; that means it catch almost the entire force of the wind. Since the above barrier systems acts as a perfect obstacle to the wind, the maximum force in the wind will be applied on the barriers to move it; and so, the tapping of the wind energy is the maximum possible magnitude. The force of the trapped wind on the barrier system can be calculated as-

Force of the wind x surface area of the barrier system - (minus) the drag between the surface of water and the floatation.

From this calculation, we can find that the efficiency of the wind barrier system is greater than any of the other methods.

The energy out put can be multiplied by the simply increasing of the cross sectional area of the barrier systems. Since the velocity of wind increases with the increasing of the altitude, if we increase the height of the system to at maximum level, we can trap tremendous amounts of wind energy.

Working of the system

Why the system is used for hydrogen generation?

Even though the trapping of the wind energy is very great, and we can generate high voltages and high current, they are intermittent because of the to and fro movements of the barrier systems and so it is not ideal for connect to the grid. But the intermittent nature of the electricity out put have not any bad effect on electrolysis water and also importantly, the hydrogen is a highly valuable product.

The system can be also constructed on flat land with rigid surface. In this cause, the barrier system can be fixed on rolling wheels with vertical and horizontal bearings and the barrier systems can role on that wheels.

Attractiveness of offshore based system:.

a) Wind resource is very high. About 10 kilometer offshore will provide considerably constant and high velocity wind.

b) There is no turbulence in the offshore because of not having any obstacles.

c) Offshore have almost zero roughness  (it is noted that roughness is about 0.5 for even on a plane runway).

d) Since the the wind barrier systems require vast area for the to and fro movements and rotate when wind directions changes. Since the sea has tremendous surface area, large number of barrier power systems can be constructed.

Difficulties: Offshore system

a)  Depth of the sea (construction of sea bed based supporting stand).

b) Violent winds and waves may cause damage to the system.

c) Corrosive sea water.

d) Difficulties due to the tidal water rising.

Difficulties: Onshore system:

a) Wind resource is lower.

b) Turbulence,  roughness, obstacles to the wind. etc.

c) The system requires vast area of land for the construction of flat rigid platform.

d) Construction of vast platforms in hilly areas is difficult (windy areas are not always flat)

Some suggestions:

Make the system with light weight and extremely strong, completely anticorrosive material; maximum play length (rack length), quick and efficient operations of the windows, construction of the system with huge dimension (especially height) etc.

* The barrier power plant system can be also used to generate energy from tidal current in the sea / lake. Here, we can use a rail system, installed on the sea / lake bottom to guide and role the barriers to and fro.
